How to find your “Right Work” – This may surprise you!

As Encore Entrepreneur’s we understand that there is A LOT MORE to work than a paycheck.

We understand that to satisfied our work must be engaging, we need to be good at what we are doing or be engaged in the process of getting better (and probably both) and most importantly our work needs to be meaningful. We want to make people’s lives better. Right?

This article-  http://ideas.ted.com/whats-the-most-satisfying-job-in-the-world-youd-be-surprised/

And this video will help you find the RIGHT work- http://www.ted.com/talks/barry_schwartz_the_way_we_think_about_work_is_broken

Here’s a clue. It’s not what you do, it’s what you THINK (or believe) about what you do, that makes ALL the difference.

Get the Job You Love

Lauren Bates is a youngster with some good advice. She is Head of Marketing for UrbanStems, an on-demand flower delivery service based in NYC & DC and she wrote an excellent article for mindbodygreen.com that I think us Encore Entrepreneur’s can also benefit from. Be sure to read her entire article. Here are a few of the ideas she elaborats on…

1. Always be searching.

2. Narrow your focus.

3. Don't just think of LinkedIn as a source of many email updates.

4. Go to the source.

5. Put up your happiness radar.

Finding your WHY & your “caring” rather than your “calling”

Yes, I want, and need, to earn money, but at this point in my life I would define success much more broadly than just earning money. I find I like myself better when I can define WHY I do the work I do in ways that includes much more than the money I receive. When I feel that the work I do contributes to the greater good I feel better about it. In other words the way I define success for my “Encore” includes feeling good about the work I’m doing. Success includes the feeling that I’m making a difference.

Does that make sense to you?

In a recent blog post the author Seth Godin made the point that finding your “calling” can be a daunting task… while finding things you care about can be reasonably easy. The point is this, you don’t have to find that one ideal “calling” you can find work that you “care about”. Work that gives you a sense of contribution and a feeling of being of service.Be the reason some smiles

The successful “Encore Entrepreneurs” I’ve interviewed would not consider themselves successful if they could not take pride in the work they were doing. I would not consider myself successful as an Encore Entrepreneur if I could not see myself making the world at least a little bit better because of what I do.

So here are some key questions for you:

Why, in addition to the money, do you want to do what you are doing (or are considering doing)?

What do you care about? How can you add value to, or serve those who are doing things that you care about?

I’m always available as a sounding board. Let me know if you have some ideas you want to kick around.

Perfect is the Enemy of Good

Have you ever heard the saying that “perfect is the enemy of good”? Sometimes the concept is started as “perfect is the enemy of success”.

The idea is this, if you are pursuing perfection you never get your projects to completion. The advice is to “seek excellence rather than perfection”.

I think people also face a similar problem when it comes to “finding their passion”.

It’s easy to get lost in the seeking.

My advice is to “do what you like”. Progress of all kinds (including our personal and economic development) is dependent on “doing”, taking action. Seeking can easily result in despair where action can result in “course adjustments” that clarifies how your passion can manifest as vocation.

Perhaps this concept can be phrased as “seeking is the enemy of finding”. And the advice? “Take heartfelt action now”.

Don’t Fail Your Own Doofus Test

doo·fus
ˈdo͞ofəs/

DOOFUS TEST- A test to determine a person’s commitment, fortitude and/or resourcefulness. If a person fails the test he/she is dismissed as a doofus.

An example of a Doofus Test would be asking for a meeting at a time that would require the person to commute during a peak traffic time.

Another might be to ask the person to do a task that would stretch their comfort zone.

I originally heard of these tests from a client of mine at the time, mega successful businessman Dan Pena.

These tests can be very revealing… equally revealing is when you have a task in front of you and you find a way to weasel out of it. You fail your own Doofus Test. The result? You diminish yourself in your own eyes.

Honor yourself. Remember the Four Agreements

1. Be impeccable with your word.

2. Don’t take anything personally.

3. Don’t make assumptions.

4. Always do your best.

14 Tips For Creating Your Own Dream Job at 50+ FREE WEBINAR

Request immediate access to the FREE WEBINAR below…

Becoming self-employed at 50+ can reduce stress, add joy and income to our lives while also allowing us to do work we are passionate about, work that gives us a sense of connection and contribution.

Here’s the problem; when you’re over 50 and starting your own business, even as a solo-preneur, a one person business, you face challenges and obstacles that your younger counter-parts do not.

Your greatest asset, your life-experience, is also your greatest weakness.

While your experience can help you identify work you’re passionate about, your experience, or lack of experience, can result in you using outdated marketing or communication tactics that cripple your chances of success.

Our values, needs and aspirations are different than entrepreneurs in their 20’s and 30’s.

We may be more committed to doing work that has a positive social impact, or that is connected with a passion that we have long ignored, or had on the back-burner. We may find it much more important to have control over our time so we can assist with grandchildren or aging parents, or simply do some of the things on our bucket lists.

The “How to Become an Encore Entrepreneur” series of 7 classes is designed to help you solve the problems faced by 50+ entrepreneurs.  You will learn from the experience of others and be guided on your own path of entrepreneurial discovery.

Interview with Santa Ed Taylor

I was recently interviewed by a reader of my book…

"I knew after finishing the book that I was to move fearlessly forward with this project. I conducted the interview and it was fun, light and informative. It’s a fourteen minute segment, talking about the book and a bit of Eds story.

The video is a bit raw and rough as it’s the first one, the lighting is bad and the sound is scratchy from time to time but I had so much fun and will get better each time I put one together. Please enjoy the interview with Santa Ed below…"
